গবেষকদের মতে, প্লাস্টিকের মধ্যে থাকা ‘বিসফেনল’ নামের টক্সিন এ ক্ষেত্রে বড় ঘাতক। গরম খাবার বা পানীয় প্লাস্টিকের সংস্পর্শে এলে ওই রাসায়নিক খাবারের সঙ্গে মেশে। এটি নিয়মিত শরীরে ঢুকলে মহিলাদের ইস্ট্রোজেন হরমোনের কাজের স্বাভাবিকতা বিঘ্নিত হয়। পুরুষদের ক্ষেত্রে শুক্রাণু কমে যায়। হার্ট, কিডনি, লিভার, ফুসফুস এবং ত্বকও মারাত্মক ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হতে পারে।

গবেষণায় আরও জানা গিয়েছে, প্লাস্টিকের কাপ বানাতে সাধারণত যে যে উপাদান ব্যবহার করা হয়, সেগুলি বেশি মাত্রায় শরীরে প্রবেশ করলে ক্লান্তি, হরমোনের ভারসাম্যতা হারানো, মস্তিষ্কের ক্ষমতা কমে যাওয়া-সহ একাধিক রোগে আক্রান্ত হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা থাকে।

বোতল বা পাত্র তৈরিতে ব্যবহৃত পলিভিনাইল ক্লোরাইডকে (পিভিসি) নরম করা হয় থ্যালেট ব্যবহার করে। এই ‘থ্যালেট’ আমাদের শরীরের জন্য বিষের ন্যায়!
